A. General information
Formally the IFIP Full Member is Polish Academy of Sciences. In fact it is represented by the Committee of Informatics (Computer Science) in Polish Academy of Sciences. The Polish Academy of Sciences is a corporation of the outstanding scientists in different fields. The Committees of Polish Academy of Sciences (PAS) gather the members of PAS and other specialists from the different universities, institutes and organisations of the respective fields. The Committee of Informatics has about 30 full members and about 200 members of three sections in the framework of the Committee:
B. Activities in Poland
a. National conference on computer networks and distributed computer systems organised by Committee of Informatics in Polish Academy of Sciences and Silesian Technical University in Gliwice.
b. International symposium on intelligent information systems organised by Institute of Foundations of Computer Science and Committee of Informatics in Polish Academy of Sciences.
c. National conference on reliability and diagnostics in computer systems organised by Institute of Informatics in Technical University of Zielona Gora.
d. National School of Computer Architectures organised by Wroclaw University of Technology.
e. International conference on systems science (including a part on information and computer systems) organised by Polish Academy of Sciences and Institute of Control and Systems Engineering at Wroclaw University of Technology. This conference will be held in Wroclaw on 11-14 September 2001, but it has been prepared during the last year.
Proceedings of these conferences have been published and distributed.
2. Participation of our Member Society in other committees of Polish Academy of Sciences, in particular in the Committee of Automation and Robotics (common meetings and events).
3. Publishing of three journals in English with international editorial boards: Systems Science, Control and Cybernetics, Foundations of Computing and Decision Sciences and one journal in Polish: Archives of Theoretical and Applied Informatics.
4. Analysis of the results of projects in computer science and engineering supported by State Committee for Scientific Research, organisation of a special workshop with annual reports.
5. Analyses, opinions and contributions concerning the state of the research and the research organisations in Poland, in the field of computer science and engineering.
6. Two plenary meetings of the Committee and the meetings of its sections including discussions on current problems of computer networks, decision support systems, architecture of computer systems, software engineering, education.
C. Relations with IFIP
In 2000 (September 14-15) the meeting of WG 6.8 "Wireless Communications" was organised in Gdansk. The meeting was connected with conference "Personal Wireless Communications". The conference focused on technical aspects such as network architecture and control, wireless LAN, ATM and local loop, future mobile communication systems and supporting technologies. Prof. J. Wozniak was a chair of the International Program Committee and five other members of our Member Society participated in the International Program Committee. The proceedings of the Conference have been published and distributed.
In 2001 (April 24-26) the 6th Workshop on Intelligent Manufacturing Systems, co-sponsored by IFIP Working Group 5.7, was organised in Poznan. This meeting brought together representatives from industry, research institutions and universities to give an overview of the state-of-art, to present new research results and to exchange ideas and experience in the field of intelligent manufacturing systems. The goal of the Workshop was to help define the future trends in intelligent manufacturing systems. Prof. G. Morel from France was a chairman of the International Program Committee and six other members of our Member Society participated in the International Program Committee, including Prof. T. Puchalka as a vice-chairman.
In 2000 our Member Society actively participated in the preparation of the following IFIP events:
1. Conference on Mathematical and Engineering Aspects of Optimal Design (August 2001, Poznan, Poland),
2. The Third IFIP WG 6.1 International Working Conference on Distributed Applications and Interoperable Systems (September 2001, Krakow, Poland).
Polish specialists participated in XVI IFIP WORLD COMPUTER CONGRESS (Beijing, August 2000):
11 papers were presented, including one keynote paper in the conference IIP2000,
Prof. P. Dembinski was a member of IPC of ICS2000 and Prof. Z. Bubnicki was a member of IPC of IIP2000,
Prof. Z. Bubnicki participated in the meeting of General Assembly.
The participations of Polish representatives in IFIP events, the meetings of TC, WG etc. have been strongly limited by the financial restrictions. The Polish representatives have been active in technical committees TC 6 and TC 12.
