Abstract
This tutorial is intended to give an overview of the distributed systems supervision question through a comprehensive state-of-the-art of the existing solutions for this kind of supervision. It will also present, as a case study in this field, a new generic, innovative and comprehensive solution encompassing in a seamless way not only the well known network and computing infrastructures but also the application level supervision. This new supervision middleware, called GeneSyS (for Generic Systems Supervision), is issued from the European Community project IST-34162. Through didactic presentations and demonstrations, this tutorial will give key information about the distributed systems supervision in general illustrated by our case study.
The attendees will :
| - |
Understand the problematic of the distributed systems supervision and have an overview of the existing supervision frameworks through a comprehensive state-of-the-art presentation, |
| - |
Understand the concepts and architecture issues of an implemented new and innovative solution, GeneSyS, as well as practical questions (how to develop my own components by re-using the code of the existing ones, how to set-up my own supervision framework on my proprietary information system). |
Several demonstrations will be shown to the attendees during the tutorial, illustrating the benefits of having a generic, open and comprehensive supervision solution. Among others :
| - |
How to write a new agent with the provided templates and to inter-operate with the existing supervision frameworks, |
| - |
How to set-up a complete supervision configuration with a running example coming from the industrial validation scenarios testbeds in various contexts (space and web servers domains). |
| - |
Presentations of several existing components features. |
Special attention will be given to the open-source approach in this field and to the benefits of this strategy.
Presenters
Jean-Eric BOHDANOWICZ (EADS SPACE Transportation) graduated in computing science, electronics, network and telecoms fields. He managed several studies on networking supervision for EADS in both fields of R&D and industrial applications and in an international context. He is the GeneSyS project manager.
Stefan WESNER (HLRS - Stuttgart University) is head of the Software Technology Group at "HLRS". He is co-ordinating the GRID-computing activities and the research in emerging technologies such as WEB-Services and Component based software architectures. He is also giving lectures in the area of Software Engineering and Java Programming. He is co-author of an MPEG-4/RTP IETF Internet-Draft and was involved in the ISO/MPEG-4 standard.
Hendrik HEIMER (NAVUS GmbH) has nearly 20 years of experience in different management positions in industry. In 1995, he founded NAVUS, focussing on software solutions for scientific and military projects. Besides software technology, he is developing business strategies for exploitation of NAVUS projects and especially of GeneSyS.
Laszlo KOVACS (MTA SZTAKI), technical doctor in computer science, is the founder and head of the Department of Distributed Systems (DSD) at MTA SZTAKI (research institute in Hungary). He was involved in different research projects in the areas of computer network protocol design, specification, verification and implementation. He is a member of the Advisory Committee of W3C. He is leading the dissemination and standardization activities of GeneSyS.
