Workshop on Broadband Satellite Communication Systems will be held as part of the WCC 2004 Conference in Toulouse , France , from 22 August to 27 August 2004 . This one-day workshop will consist of a state-of-the-art session (invited papers related to Broadband Satellite Communication Systems) followed by a Technical Session and concluded by a panel session. All accepted papers (after peer review by experts in the field) will be included in the WCC2004 Workshop Proceedings. The Technical Sessions will describe significant research as well as innovative development and applications. We solicit original papers describing state-of-the-art research and development in all areas of satellite communications. In order to encourage closer interaction between academic and industrial networking research communities, both academic research papers and industrial contributions are welcome.

Recently the request of multimedia services has been rapidly increasing and satellite networks appear to be attractive for a fast service deployment and for extending the typical service area of terrestrial systems. In comparison with traditional wide area networks, a characteristic of satellite communication systems is their ability in broadcasting and multicasting multimedia information flows anywhere over the satellite coverage. Telecommunication networks are moving towards an all-IP environment with unified protocols in both access and core networks. Therefore, the following step to be achieved is the integration of terrestrial and satellite systems not only from the coverage standpoint, but also for what concerns protocols until the application layer. In such a context, several techniques need to be proposed in order to optimize the system at different layers in terms of definition of orbital configurations (LEO, MEO, GEO), transmission techniques, efficient share of satellite link resources and new communication services (multimedia applications, mobility services, positioning services.).

Topics of special interest, but not limited to, are:

•  Satellite Network Architectures
•  Hybrid Satellite and Terrestrial Networks
•  Services and Applications
•  Internet Services over Satellite
•  Traffic Characterization and Modeling
•  Quality of Service Aspects
•  Quality of Service Guarantee with Multimedia Traffics
•  TCP/IP Performance over Satellite
•  New Transport Protocols for Mobile Satellite Systems
•  Network Control and Management
•  Mobility Management and Services
•  Radio Resource Management for Hybrid Terrestrial and Satellite Systems
•  Access Schemes with Adaptive Transmission bit-rate
•  Reservation Protocols for Satellite Access
•  Advances in Modulation and Coding for Satellite Communications

Authors should submit an extended abstract (up to 1500 words) or a Full Paper (up to 3000 words). Extended abstracts or papers are requested in PDF format, eventually in Postscript format. The submission must include a cover page with the most appropriated topic(s), the title of the paper, the names and affiliations of authors, complete mailing address, telephone and fax numbers, and the email address of the contact author(s). Proposals should be submitted in electronic form only to BSCS Committee ( BSCS04@laas.fr ). For more details about the conference please refer to the Conference Web site: http://www.wcc2004.org

Papers or abstracts must not be submitted simultaneously to another conference or publication nor be previously published elsewhere. When appropriate, authors should arrange for a release for publication from their employer prior to submission. Papers accompanied by non-disclosure agreement forms are not accepted.

At least one author of each accepted paper is required to register with the workshop or the conference and present the paper. A first version of the proceedings will be available at the workshop. The BSCS workshop Proceedings will be published by Kluwer, IFIP's official publisher, after the workshop. Details on how to format the paper can be found at www.wkap.com/ifip/styles .

Extended abstract submission: March 31, 2004 extended to April 30
Notification of acceptance: April 30, 2004
Camera Ready paper: May 31, 2004

The Final Programme is online!

We are very proud to present an extremely attractive programme that offers more than six hundred presentations.
This very rich programme offers a large variety of opportunities. Attendees will be able to compose their own menu, by mixing on-the-edge research and state-of-the-practice results in their own field of expertise, together with surveys and prospective views in other domains of interest.
The overall schedule of sessions and the social events have been designed to facilitate fruitful interactions between attendees.

Join us during a week and share l'esprit de Toulouse !
