Selection of Toulouse Museums

. Musée des Augustins:

In the Augustinian convent, one of the finest and most complete monastic ensembles from the 14th and 15th centuries. Turned into a museum after the Revolution, it contains a rich and varied collection of Romanesque sculptures as well as works by Rodin, Camille Claudel and Maillol; Italian art by Pérugin, Crespi and Guardi; and some of Modern Art's early paintings by Manet, Toulouse-Lautrec, Vuillard and Manguin.
. The Bemberg Foundation:

Toulouse's most splendid « Hôtel particulier » (a fine Rennaissance mansion completed in 1571) now houses a private collection of fine art. 16th and 17th centuries. European paintings are displayed alongside eighty French works from the 19th and 20th centuries, including a large selection of Bonnard. Clouet, Cranach, Pieter de Hooch, Tintoretto, Manet, Pissaro and Vlaminck are just some of the artists whose work is on show in this exceptional setting.
. Saint Raymond Museum:

Housed in a former college built in 1523, this is an archeological museum with exhibits dating from 3before JC to 1000 AD. Jewellery from the Volques-Tectosages era (3-2 before JC), antique and medieval coins, mosaics, bronzes and trinkets from down the ages. A particular interest is the collection of antique sculptures from Toulouse's Roman era.
.

George Labit Museum:

This is France's rare provincial museum to display an impressive collection of art from Egypt and Asia.

. Chateau d'Eau Photographic Gallery:

A circular public water tower built in 1822-the year Niepce invented photography-today houses a photographic gallery developed by the Toulouse photographer Jean Dieuzaide. Exceptional temporary exhibitions have been bringing the best of the world's images to Toulouse since the gallery's opening in 1974.
.

The Cité de l'espace:

1997 sees the opening of this new scientific and cultural venue on a 7-acre site with 2000 sqm of exhibition space. Permanent exhibits include a full-scale 300ft-high model of the Ariane 5 rocket on its launch pad; a planetarium seating 140. Visitors can simulate launches, become astronauts for a day and simulate space missions, or learn about Earth observation in a space craft.

.

Toulouse-Lautrec Museum:

The ancient Bishop's palace at Albi houses the biggest single collection (600 works) of the locally-born nobleman who made his reputation in 19th century Paris.

- Albi : an exceptionally pretty town, dominated by its massive red-brick cathedral.
- Gaillac : a lovely town to visit, in the middle of the Gaillac vineyards.
- Castres : the houses that line the river banks are a mass of multi-coloured facades.
. Tarn et Garonne

- Montauban : an attractive town with interesting architecture and the Ingres museum, containing works from this Montauban-born painter.
- Moissac : famous for its abbey and cloister, probably the finest of all surviving Romanesque cloisters. Moissac is also deservedly recognised for its delicious Chasselas grapes, the only AOC table grapes in France.
