Official Tours
On Wednesday, July 29 in the afternoon there will be an official tour to be chosen at subscription system (to be annouced). There are four options from which one should be chosen:
1. Stone Paths Cultural Project
Stone Paths Cultural Project
It's a "live museum" from Italy colonization in the area. You can see stone,
wood and brick houses more than 100 years old. You're invited do visit -
both externally and internally - some of them and see local costumes, know
the Veneto language, taste sheep dairy, homemade cookies and wine. Try the
" chimarrão", typical beverage of indian tradition, very popular in all Rio
Grande do Sul.
2. Vale dos Vinhedos- "Vineyard Valley"
Vineyard Valley is located within the cities of Bento Gonçalves, Garibaldi
and Monte Belo do Sul. The area has 24 wine factories, hotel and hostel
services, cheese shops, restaurantes and artist's studios. The region offers
many attractions, includine wine factory tours, wine degustations and
typical dinners with choir animation, served in the colorful and cozy tavern
ambients.
3. Maria Fumaça
A return to the past in a steam locomotive - popularly called in Brazil
Maria Fumaça, or "Smoke Mary" - tour. Clocking at one and a half hour of
local sighting, passing by the cities of Bento Gonçalves, Garibaldi and
Carlos Barbosa. Includes artistic show and sparkling wine/grape juice
degustations.
4. Antas River Valley
Among the valleys and high mountains there is a place of great beauty surrounded by an exuberant landscape. At 25 km from the city, is Ernesto Dorneles Bridge, also known as "Ponte Rio das Antas", one of the largest in the world in suspended parallel archs. In the valley there is also the "cachaça" store, plantation of citrus fruits and the Rio das Antas Adventure Pole. Visitors can observe the water forming a huge "horseshoe", one of the most beautiful postcards of Bento Gonçalves in addition to a beautiful landscape along the tour. Veranópolis, a city 45 km north of Bento Gonçalves, crossing the Rio das Antas, is called the Land of Longevity. These features allow an outstanding quality of life at the national level. Some special attractions are the gastronomy, religion, natural and architectural sites.

The Região das Hortênsias or "Hydrangea Region" has breathtaking sight spots that make a natural "postcard" tour. Take lunch at a Café Colonial - a feast with dozens of different local specialties, visit a chocolate factory, relax at parks Knorr and Caracol and lakes Negro and Joaquina Bier, see the mesmerizing architecture of the Nossa Senhora de Lourdes cathedral...

Opening concert with Expresso 25
With the repertoire inspired in the most current and innovative in the brazilian vocal music,
the group Expresso 25 presents the show " Brazilian Sound Imaginary" in the WCCE 2009 opening concert, July, 27 at the auditorium 7, at 8 pm.
The Expresso 25 , with an european tour scheduled next january 2010, embodies about 40 voices, jointly with the musicians Clóvis Boca
Freire (bass) and Ricardo Arenhalt (drums and percussion), with musical and artistic coordination of Pablo Trindade.
Other activities includes happy hour with live music at Bangalô Pub and dance presentation with native indian children.
The city
Bento Gonçalves is a town located in the state of Rio Grande do Sul, Brasil. It is the wine capital of Brazil, located in a region with many vineyards. Many of the Italian immigrants and their descendants helped establish the wine industry in the region. As of 2006 its population was of approximately 103,000 inhabitants.
One may experience the rolling country side of Bento Gonçalves, Garibaldi and Carlos Barbosa by taking a day trip on the Maria Fumaça steam locomotive. One may also learn more about the Italian heritage of the people through such museums as Epopéia Italiana.

How to arrive
There will be some shuttle buses from Porto Alegre to Bento Gonçalves, which can be bought with Plus Turismo .
Alternative option is to get a bus at the central bus station (Rodoviaria Central de Porto Alegre in portuguese). You can get to the central bus station either by taxi or train.
The buses leave, approximately, every 30 minutes from 5 am to 10 pm. The trip average time is 2h30min.

The weather in july
In South America, the end of July corresponds to the winter vacation. The climate in the south of Brazil at this time of the year is nice with diurnal temperatures between 5 and 15 degrees Celsius and almost no rain.
